One Day at a Time in Al-Anon:
Once upon a time three wives of alcoholics decided to meet to learn about Al-Anon. Soon others in the same dilemma came to join them and they became a flourishing group. A number of members who were really putting the program to work had the joy of seeing their husbands join AA.
Then one member stayed away from meetings, and then another, and another. When somebody called them to find out why, they said they were disappointed in Al-Anon because of the way personal, confidential matters had been gossiped about, causing difficulties in the families.
When the culprit was found and reproached, she said in great surprise: “But I only told my husband!”
What we hear in an Al-Anon meeting, and privately from our Al- Anon friends, is meant only to help us. It must be kept locked in our hearts, just as we want to be sure others are keeping locked up what we tell them.
Outside our fellowship, I will allow myself to speak only of Al-Anon principles, never of personalities. My success with the program depends on each person’s discretion.
Today’s Reminder:
“Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our Traditions, ever reminding us to place principles above personalities.”
