One Day at a Time in Al-Anon:

What happens when the constructive ideas I am exposed to in Al-Anon just roll off my consciousness? Why don’t they penetrate my mind? Why can’t I absorb them, so they’ll really work for me?

One of our slogans is a single word: THINK. How can I do that if all I do is talk? I can benefit from the Steps and the Slogans only if I think about them. I can learn from others only if I learn to keep silent, and think about what I am hearing. The compulsive talkers among us are those who get the least help from the Al-Anon program, and make the least progress.

Today’s Reminder:

I will construct my share of the conversation thoughtfully, remembering that its purpose is to help someone else, as well as to help me think more clearly. I will listen to others and extract helpful, enlightening ideas from what they say.

“I pray to acquire the habit of listening, confining my own talk to what might be of help to others. Teach me the use of silence.”
